2010 ELECTION CYCLE RECAP
As we entered the 2010 election cycle, we proudly looked back at a 2008 cycle that was our most successful in the 25-year history of the Florida Congressional Committee. We shattered all of our previous fundraising and campaign contribution statistics, ranging from Dollars raised to amounts contributed to the number of candidates supported, placing us in the top 5 (or higher) among all pro-Israel PACs nationally in many of these categories.
We began the 2010 cycle right where we left off, with an event-filled Spring (2009) during which we hosted or attended events for Senators Bob Bennett (R-UT), Jim Bunning (R-KY), Jim DeMint (R-SC), and Harry Reid (D-NV).
In the Fall, we attended a private event for Senator John Thune (R-SD) at a member's home on Indian Creek Island. We then hosted Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) at a member's home in Presidential Estates (NMB area), followed by a visit from Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), whom we also hosted at a member's home in Aventura. We then participated in a private event for Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), who was a guest at a friend's home in Boca Raton.
On the House of Representatives side, Congresswomen Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL-18) accompanied Congressmen Eric Cantor (R-VA-07, the Republican Whip and coincidentally the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives) at one of his events at a member's house in March.
Some of us saw Congressman Cantor again one week later, when he was the "Guest of Honor" in the Palm Beach area. He was accompanied that time by Republican Florida Congressmen Vern Buchanan and Adam Putnam, who is leaving the House of Representative to run for Florida Secretary of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs.
In April, a few of our members attended two non-PAC events with local Congressman Kendrick Meek (D-FL), who is running for the open U.S. Senate seat recently vacated by Mel Martinez, as well as City of Miami Gardens Councilman Andre Williams, who is running for Congressman Meek's soon-to-be-vacated House seat.
In June, we also hosted Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-NV) at a member's home and supported Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY) while in Denver, one of our members from Denver attended a local event with Congressman Mike Coffman (R-CO) during the Summer.
We began September by participating in Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's (R-FL) successful and well-attended 3rd Annual pro-Israel luncheon at the Fairmont Turnberry Resort. Also addressing the crowd was Congressman and Republican Whip Eric Cantor (see above).
In October, our good friend Congressman Elliot Engel (D-NY) joined us for breakfast at a member's home in Golden Beach, while the following month, we participated in a private event for Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL), who was a guest at a member's home in Williams Island (Aventura).
We closed out 2009 with a late December Aventura reception for State Senator Ted Deutch (D-FL) with several local activists and donors. Sen. Deutch was running for (and won) Robert Wexler's former seat in the U.S. house of Representatives (Florida's 19th Congressional District), for which there was a special election in the first half of 2010.
We began 2010 by hosting a lunch with Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) at a member's office in Hallandale Beach during January. With a dozen of our leaders and members present, we had a candid discussion with the Senator about a number of topics relevant to our interests.
In February, we participated in a Coral Gables luncheon for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). Sen. Gillibrand was appointed by New York Gov. Patterson to fill Sen. Hillary Clinton's seat when Mrs. Clinton was appointed to be Secretary of State. We then participated in a private event for seven-term Congressman, and now Candidate for U.S. Senate, Roy Blunt (R-MO-07) on Super Bowl Sunday. Those who attended were invited to stay for a Super Bowl party at our host's magnificent home, where a delicious catered meal was served.
The next morning, we were pleased to host a breakfast at a member's home in Golden Beach for five-term Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN-06), who - as Chairman of the House Republican Conference - is also the third highest-ranking leader of his party. In addition to being the co-Chairman of the House Task Force on anti-Semitism, Congressman Pence has long demonstrated his steadfast support for American Jews, the people of Israel, and a strong U.S.-Israel relationship.
In mid-February, we hosted two-term, South Florida Congressman Ron Klein (D-FL-22) for an evening reception at a member's home in the Aventura area. Congressman Klein is Pence's co-Chairman of the Task Force mentioned above.
A few days later, our good friends in Boca Raton hosted a terrific brunch with special guest Congressman and Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA-07). The event was to support candidate Dennis Ross (R), who is running for the open seat in Florida's 12th Congressional District, currently held by our good friend Adam Putnam (who was discussed above).
That same evening, we hosted Senator David Vitter (R-LA) for a reception at our Chairman's home in Presidential Estates.
On the 1st of March, we co-hosted a private evening reception for 17-term Congressman, and Chairman of House Armed Services Committee, Ike Skelton (D-MO-04). The Congressman was at a member's home in the Bal Harbour area, and was accompanied by local Congresswoman and Chief Deputy Whip Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL-20).
A week later, at the same member's home, we co-hosted another private evening reception for five-term Congressman, and now Candidate for the open U.S. Senate seat, Mark Steven Kirk (R-IL-10).
On April 11th, we participated in a brunch for 11-term Congressman Rob Andrews (D-NJ-01) at a member's home in North Miami Beach. That same evening, we participated in a reception for 15-term Congressman and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD-05) at a member's home in Williams Island. Hoyer is certainly considered to be among the most powerful lawmakers in Washington today. Local Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL) arrived just as Hoyer was concluding, which kept the "party" going for a lively hour more than we anticipated.
Later in April, we participated in a pro-Israel luncheon in Coral Gables for Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA).
Although the anticipated summer slowdown was just “around the corner”, May turned out to be a busy month for us. On the evening of the 17th, we hosted a reception at a member's home in Golden Beach for 8-term Congressman and candidate for U.S. Senate Todd Tiahrt (R-KS-04), who is running for the open seat being vacated by our good friend Sen. Sam Brownback.
The next morning, we hosted U.S. House of Representatives candidate Dennis Ross (R), who – as mentioned earlier - is running for the open seat being vacated in Florida's 12th Congressional District by Adam Putnam (also discussed above in greater detail.)
Our first event in June was on the 7th, where we began with what turned out to be a very lively breakfast meeting with Congresswoman and Chief Deputy Whip Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL-20).
On June 22nd, we hosted a breakfast in Bal Harbour for our good friend and Congressman, Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-09).
We closed out the month on the 24th, when we hosted former New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte (R), who is the leading candidate for the open U.S. Senate seat created by the retiring Sen. Judd Gregg. Considering that she is not an incumbent nor has she held Federal office, Ayotte impressed us with her particularly strong position on the need to maintain an unshakable bond between the U.S. and Israel.
In July, we hosted a reception for Congressman Gregg Harper (R-MS-03) at a member’s home in Bay Harbour Islands on the 12th.
Then, on July 25th, we hosted Congressman Brad Ellsworth (D-IN-09) at a member’s home in the Presidential Estates Community (North Miami Beach). Congressman Ellsworth is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate from Indiana, running for the seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Evan Bayh.
On August 4th, we hosted Hernando County Sheriff Rich Nugent (R), who is running for the Congressional seat being vacated by the retiring Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL-05), a long-time strong supporter of the pro-Israel agenda. We closed out the month hosting two candidates for the U.S. Senate.
On August 25th, we welcomed former U.S. Congressman, Senator and Ambassador to Germany Dan Coats for two events. Coats is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate from Indiana, running for the seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Evan Bayh (D).
Then, on August 31st, we hosted North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven for two events. This former banker is the Republican nominee for the Senate seat being vacated in his home state by the retiring Sen. Byron Dorgan (D).
In early September, we co-hosted candidate Joel Pollak (R-IL-09) for a breakfast in Bal Harbour. Joel is a young up-and-comer, and the only viable observant Jewish candidate for Congress. Later in the month, we co-hosted a well-attended dinner for Arkansas Congressman and candidate for U.S. Senate, John Boozman (R) in a member’s Sukkah in Bal Harbour.
On October 3rd, we co-hosted an evening reception for former Congressman Pat Toomey (R-PA) at a member’s home in the Bal Harbour area. Toomey is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania, vying for the seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Arlen Specter, and running against JStreet-endorsed Congressman Joe Sestak in one of the country’s closer and highest profile Senate races.
A few days later, we hosted Congresswoman Karhy Castor(D-FL-11) for a downtown Ft. Lauderdale lunch, in what turned out to be a succesfful effort to broaden our membership in that part of South Florida. We look forward to expanding our presence in the area.
